Locksmithing is one of those professions that can provide people with high income with little investment. While it is true that if you train to be a locksmith you have the potential to score many clients with just a small amount of capital invested, this prediction depends on several factors. First of all there must be enough of a population to support the business. Repairing, replacing or re-keying locks on houses, cars and businesses is something that happens every day. A town of a few thousand people is likely to keep the business very active. Covering a whole county / region with your locksmith services increases your target market even further.

Another factor to consider before you train to be a locksmith is the number of existing locksmiths in the area. If the area you wish to set up the business is well populated, then you may need to find out how many locksmiths already operate there. The problem with this profession is that many people who have retired or are working in a related field, like running a hardware store, take locksmithing as a hobby. Your main competition may not be fully fledged locksmith business so be keen in your enquiries.

If a person decides to train to be a locksmith, they can expect to make only a small investment for a short term course. An aptitude is required towards dealing with gadgetry, engineering, math and some carpentry. Basically you will need to be good with your hands and have a sound mind. Factor in all the costs so you can be sure you can afford to be properly qualified. Another cost you will need to consider is the start up capital. On the higher end, people who wish to handle automotive locks require a fair amount of start up. This is because buying the parts to replace such locks can be an expensive affair and most clients will not hand over any cash until the job is done. Standard wooden and uPVC door lock spare parts are of course much cheaper, but there are more locksmiths out there offering this service.

There are other skills that a person will need to develop in order to succeed in this business. Before you commit to train to be a locksmith, you should remember that you will be put in the position of having lots of one on one interaction with clients. This kind of work requires a person to talk to the client before, during and after the job is done. You will have to visit the premises to assess the problem, negotiate for parts and labour, and eventually request payment. All this will require knowing how to interact well with people. You also need to learn how to advertise your business in the correct manner and gain more visibility, and eventually conversions into paying jobs.
