Frequently Asked Questions about MPL’s Locksmith Training Courses

Here we have a few of our most commonly asked questions.  If you have a question you can’t see answered, feel free to call us on 01924 360444 and we’ll be more than happy to help.

(Q) How can I become a locksmith?

(A) Anyone who has the desire to become a locksmith and a practical mind can be successful. Being a locksmith is not just about the initial training process, but on-going learning and skills development. We see many students come on our course who develop into thriving locksmith businesses with a very good standard of living. We tend to find that their success depends on 3 main factors:

- the quality of the initial training
MPL makes sure that every student who attends their locksmith training course is 100% satisfied when they leave. The course director personally ensures that every student who leaves us has the confidence, skills, and knowledge to undertake their first locksmithing job on the road. Our course hasn’t been developed overnight, and is continually updated and modified to reflect the changes in skills required.

- the desire and ability to generate the work for yourself
We endeavour to provide work to any students that come on our course should it become available in their local area. But we also stress to students the importance of marketing your own business and generating your own work – we know for a fact that those who take the time and effort to market their business will reap the results. Part of our locksmith training course focuses on the marketing element of your business. Through years of experience with various mediums of advertising we can make the best recommendations based on your business.

- your attitude and commitment to work
Being a locksmith has a great advantage in sense of being your own boss. However, being a locksmith means that you can be on call 24 hours a day. Especially when starting up in business, it can make huge differences in attending those jobs that come in at 2 o clock in the morning. Not only does this show your commitment and professionalism, but these jobs can also be very profitable. Customers are often willing to pay over £100 just for the labour charges in these situations, and these can often lead to further work being passed your way!

(Q) Do I need any qualifications to train as a locksmith?

(A) You don’t need any qualifications to train as a locksmith – just a desire and commitment to learn, as well as an interest in general locksmithing. We always suggest that students who have come from a manual job/background or those that are used to working with tools often find the course easier to pick up. We also suggest that students who are wishing to take the course but are completely new to using tools / manual work undertake our 3 day course to give them that bit of extra familiarisation time as well as the 1:1 help they may need.

(Q) What about tools, after I have completed the training?

(A) Throughout the training course you will be using state of the art tools that are brand new on the market, and often make the job twice as easy. Tools are always being developed in this industry and we endeavour to keep up to date. Once the course is completed we offer a range of tool sets, and stock packs to get you set up. Students often jump at the chance to buy the range of tools that we offer at the price we do after seeing them in action throughout the training course.

(Q) Where can I buy stock from after I have completed the training?

(A) We have a large trade counter and also operate a next day delivery mail order service for all of your stock requirements. We offer great trade prices throughout our product range, and we are always on the other end of the phone to make recommendations and help you identify locks.

(Q) How big are the training classes?

(A) We have a maximum of 4 students in every class to ensure that everyone gets the attention they need, and achieves the best from the course that they choose.

(Q) Do you have to have a license to operate as a locksmith in the UK?

(A) There are currently no requirements in the UK for licensing through the government or other authorities to operate as a locksmith – although this may possibly change in the years to come.

(Q) How often do your training courses run?

(A) Our training courses run throughout the year and we can usually find dates to accommodate our student’s needs.

(Q) Why should I choose MPL’s Locksmith Training Course over others on the market?

(A) We honestly believe we represent the best value course in terms of value, knowledge, skills and long term support. For more reasons have a look at the other section titled “Why MPL?”

(Q) What is your policy on payments and refunds?

(A) We have never once been asked for a refund for one of our locksmith training courses – if there’s something you’re not sure about, we make sure we cover this before you leave the training centre. We try to make sure no student leaves the training centre unless they are 100% happy. When booking the course we will always try and book dates to accommodate your requirements. Once you have confirmed these dates, your place is guaranteed and you should make every effort to ensure that you keep these dates available. We only take a small deposit payment to secure your dates – the remainder is payable upon attending the course. Unfortunately we are unable to refund deposit payments as a result of someone changing their mind, or going on holiday. We will where possible offer alternative course dates should a student need to change. However should a student need to cancel their place due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, we will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
