A career in locksmithing can be a lifelong commitment and requires continued dedication to stay on top of the game. As the word implies, locksmithing is the trade of specialising in the design, repair, replacement and rekeying of locks. Since time began, security has always been an issue of great concern. Today people not only need to secure their homes and businesses, but also their vehicles. As the number of homes, businesses and vehicles in an area continue to increase, then so does the need for locksmiths. In order to successfully become a locksmith, a person must be able to handle the technical aspects of the job and be able to build a good client base.

Being a locksmith requires a great deal of professional training and also places you in a position of confidentiality. Customers give locksmiths access to their security measures in the home, business premises and vehicles. This is putting their safety and that of their family, and possessions, in the hands of an outsider. In many movies and documentaries locksmiths are often wrongly referred to as thieves, robbers and cowboys! This is something we are trying to stamp out of the locksmithing industry, and as such most qualify and work honestly to become respected members of society and successful businessmen.  To become a locksmith a person must be able to inspire this confidence and possess the required certifications.

When it comes to certifications necessary to become a locksmith, there are no official qualifications within the UK or England – although this could change in time. We are able to guide a potential locksmith on what locksmith courses are available to them, and the kinds, and timings, of tests they will need to undergo for proper certification. Large companies that produce locks often have their own courses that will not only train on basic locksmithing but also go deeper into how to deal with their own products. Such courses can work well for a person intending to set up a business specializing in that specific kind of lock. A person can become a locksmith and ultimately specialise in any type or area of lock that they want and feel to be most profitable.

Once certified, there are various career paths that can be taken. A person with a locksmithing certification can decide to start their own business, work at a local security business or join a large company that handles its own security arrangements. When settling on an area in which to set up shop, a person should be sure that they are not competing with too many other locksmiths. It would also be advisable to pick an area where there is a sizable population with more and more people moving to the area. However, many locksmiths will tell you, repeat business is often the best business out there.
